- As academe promotes multidisciplinary research initiatives, one anticipates researchers to similarly explore and adopt cross-methodological research approaches. Design-based research (DBR) encompasses the design, development and evaluation of an artifact or intervention with stakeholders; however, software application artifacts require researchers to consider amalgamating traditional software process models with the overarching DBR methodology. This paper presents a case study in which a cross-disciplinary project, researching and designing a means to facilitate collaborative music production practices, developed a software artifact by integrating the Spiral software process model with the problem-focused Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM) framework. These approaches share similar characteristics, such as iterative processes, real-world deployment and assessment and periodic involvement of end-users/research participants. The similarities provided stable reference points to map the Spiral model’s iterative sequence of steps to DSRM’s nominal sequence of activities. The resulting hybrid methodology successfully grounded the research project in DBR and software design and development tenets and provided scope for periodic dissemination of research results. The study highlights the need for further research on hybrid cross-disciplinary software development and research methodologies.
